Predicting language outcomes in typical development

We explore how elementary perceptual and learning mechanisms, implicated in language development, may be measured at the individual level (using combined behavioral and imaging methods) to derive early biomarkers predictive of subsequent language delay. Slightly impairments in these mechanisms at the onset of language acquisition may result in severe impairments in the preschool/early school age years. To achieve this, we are testing infants on various perceptual and learning mechanisms at several points in their development, and up until 2-3 years of age. Taking into account external factors such as SES…, we are aiming to identify those skills that predict later language outcomes at the group as well as at the individual level, and, on the long run, allow early intervention before the emergence of serious language deficits.
