A general sense of quantity at birth

date

Building on our previous results on neonates’ perception of numerosities, we demonstrated that, at just a few hours of life, human newborns possess a general sense of quantity that applies equally to numerosity, to spatial extent, and to temporal durations. We also studied the perception of small and large numerosities in newborns, and showed that newborns present a dissociation between small and large quantities: this indicates that newborns may already possess a separate system for processing small sets.
