2018-2023

A link between magnitude and visuo-spatial and motor abilities  has been demonstrated in the adult human brain. While much insight has been gained on the number-space link, the origins and developmental course of the number-action link is still poorly understood. This project investigates the onset, properties and development of the number-action link using behavioral and electrophysiological measures in human newborns and infants. We will describe when and how the action-perception system is sensitive to, and efficiently incorporates, information of number. Behavioral looking time and eye movement paradigms will test for the early presence of this link, and the ability to detect and anticipate the goal of an action using numerical information. Electrophysiological paradigms will be used to investigate infants’ EEG activity during the observation of congruent/incongruent number-action couplings. Understanding this link will have implications for education and new technologies.
