How do the languages we speak influence the way we perceive, organize, and conceptualize the world? My research focuses on the interactions between language and cognition from a cross-linguistic perspective. I am particularly interested in how we construct mental representations of entities and events in physical space, and in how the properties of different languages may shape these representations.

Perceiving, understanding, and describing the same event does not necessarily involve the same information or the same patterns of organization across languages. Languages differ in their lexicon and grammar and may make certain dimensions of experience more salient than others, particularly spatial and temporal components, thereby directing attention toward different aspects of an event, such as actions, agents, or objects. To what extent do these linguistic differences influence perception, conceptualization, categorization, and memory for experience? Which aspects of cognition are shared across speakers, and which vary as a function of linguistic experience?

These questions become particularly relevant when several languages coexist within the same individual, or when the language system is still developing or has been impaired. I investigate how linguistic experience, typological distance between languages, and individual trajectories of language acquisition and use shape information processing in monolingual, bilingual, and multilingual speakers, in both children and adults, as well as in individuals with acquired or developmental conditions affecting language, such as aphasia or dyslexia.

Infant entrainment to artificial voices

In this project, we are testing how infants react to hearing voices that either sound more artificial (machine-like), more human (human-like), or even more familiar (voice clone of the infant’s mother). Funded by SSHRC Canada (2025-2027)

Mental Space in Memory through Adversarial Collaboration: Exploring the Origins and the Developmental Course – SPACEODC

Human beings tend to spontaneously use space to think, represent externally (e.g. calendars) and even talk about a variety of non-spatial domains (e.g. time). This ability is functional from birth, how it is modulated throughout the first years of life, what are its behavioral signatures and underlying biases. Finally, we will examine whether, and how, this capacity has an impact on learning in different information domains, from birth to adulthood.

Linking early phonolexical acquisition and later vocabulary development

In this project, we test the proposal that a crucial milestone in language acquisition is reached when infants discover which sounds (consonants versus vowels) are more important at the lexical level in their native language, leading to an acceleration of subsequent vocabulary development.

Development of the auditory system and speech perception in infants- BabySIN 

On the one hand, the cerebral processing of different acoustic variations of sounds is studied in 3-month-old infants using the electroencephalography technique. On the other hand, the ability to perceive speech in noise in these infants is measured using an observation technique.

Proccesing phonological information while learning and recognizing words

It has been proposed that consonants carry more weight than vowels in lexical processing. Given the timing of acquisition observed in French, we have proposed that this consonant bias emerges in connection with phonological and (proto)lexical acquisition, a hypothesis we are currently testing.
